Sustagen vs Protein Powder
More on: Whey Protein Isolate Guides
TL;DR: Many parents search 'sustagen v protein powder" Sustagen Hospital Formula is a formulated meal replacement with 13.8 g of protein and 27 g of sugars on the panel per 60 g serve. If the goal is simply more protein, Propel Health Pure Whey Protein Isolate provides 25.1 g of protein and 1.4 g of sugars per 30 g serve, from just three ingredients.
Is Sustagen Good for Kids?
Plenty of parents would never hand their child a protein shake.
Yet many of those same parents keep a tin of Sustagen in the pantry.
It is an understandable instinct. A familiar brand, the word "Hospital" on the tin and a list of added vitamins all feel reassuring.
A tub of protein powder looks like it belongs in a Fitness Centre change room.
Turn both around and read the labels, though, and that assumption becomes interesting.

Why parents are wary of protein powder
Protein powder has an image problem.
Most of it is marketed to adults, in big tubs, with a lot of talk about training.
But whey is not an adult-only ingredient. It is one of the two main proteins in milk, alongside casein.
Whey protein isolate is that milk protein, concentrated.
So the useful question is not "is it a protein powder?"
It is "what is actually in this one?"
What's in Sustagen Hospital Formula?
According to Nestlé's ingredient list for the vanilla flavour, the first four ingredients are:
- Non fat milk solids (63%)
- Corn syrup solids
- Whole milk powder
- Sugar
One serve is three level scoops, or 60 g, which provides:
- 13.8 g protein
- 27 g sugars on the panel
Some of those sugars are lactose, the sugar naturally found in milk.
Corn syrup solids and sugar are also on the ingredient list, and the panel does not show how much comes from each.
Nestlé describes Hospital Formula as a "formulated meal replacement" that "cannot be used as a total diet replacement".
What's in Propel Health Pure Whey Protein Isolate?
Now turn over the whey.
The ingredients are:
- Australian grass-fed whey protein isolate
- Natural vanilla flavour
- Organic stevia
That is the whole list.
A 30 g serve provides:
- 25.1 g protein
- 2.8 g carbohydrate
- 1.4 g sugars
- 0.06 g fat
About 84% of the powder is protein.

Sustagen vs whey protein isolate: protein compared
| Per serve | Sustagen Hospital Formula | Propel Health Pure WPI |
|---|---|---|
| Serve size | 60 g | 30 g |
| Protein | 13.8 g | 25.1 g |
| Sugars on the panel | 27 g | 1.4 g |
| Ingredients | 25 | 3 |
| Protein share of the powder | About 23% | About 84% |
Figures are for the powder, before any milk is added.
Look at it another way.
To get the protein in one serve of the whey, you would need about 1.8 serves of Sustagen. That carries about 49 g of sugars on the panel.
The same pattern shows up in the Ensure vs whey protein isolate review.
Is Sustagen healthy?
Sustagen is not a bad product.
It does a different job.
For a child whose doctor or dietitian has said they need extra energy (carbs), a formulated product may be exactly the point.
For a parent who simply wants more protein in a child's day, the label tells a different story.
Is protein powder safe for kids?
This is the question underneath all the others.
Food comes first.
Milk, yoghurt, eggs, meat, fish and legumes are the foundation of a child's protein intake, and they bring other nutrients with them.
A protein powder is a convenience for days when meals fall short. Not every child needs one.
When a parent does reach for one, judge it like any other food: on its label, not on the shape of the tub.
For a child under four, or a child with an allergy or a medical condition, speak with a GP or Accredited Practising Dietitian first.
Can teenagers have whey protein?
Teenagers need protein as part of a normal diet while they grow, and active teenagers may need more depending on their size and what they eat.
Whey comes from milk. It is one protein source among many, and food should still do most of the work.
The same label test applies.
What to look for on any protein label for kids
Before buying any protein product for a child, turn it around and check:
- Protein per serve, in grams
- Sugars on the panel per serve
- The first three ingredients, because ingredients are listed by weight
- How many ingredients there are
- Which sweeteners, if any, are listed

The category on the front of the tub is not the test. The label on the back is.
