I'll say it again - the participants who did NOT exercise but did supplement with creatine gained muscle AND strength. 

Of course, exercise is still one of the most important things you can do for healthy ageing, and the study generally found greater physical benefits when creatine was combined with training. 

Creatine Without Exercise and Cognitive Function

The researchers also conducted an extensive battery of cognitive tests measuring memory, attention, reaction time and cognitive processing.

Creatine without exercise was associated with improvements in several cognitive improvements.

The results add to growing evidence that creatine isn't simply a muscle supplement.

Why Did the Study Use 10 g of Creatine Per Day?

Traditional creatine recommendations typically sit around 3–5 g per day.

This study used 10 g per day, which is particularly interesting given its focus on both physical and cognitive outcomes.

Increasing creatine concentrations in the brain appears to be more difficult than increasing muscle creatine.

The researchers note that brain creatine has typically increased by around 5–15% following supplementation, and higher daily doses may be required to produce meaningful increases in cerebral creatine.

This is one reason researchers are increasingly investigating 10–20 g per day when studying creatine and cognitive function.

What Does This Mean for Adults?

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this study is who it applies to.

These weren't professional athletes.

They were healthy, community-dwelling adults.

After 12 weeks, the researchers concluded that creatine supplementation with and without exercise may help middle-aged and older adults maintain muscle mass and strength while favourably affecting selected measures of cognitive function and health.

Supplementation was also well tolerated. 

So if you have always dismissed creatine because “I don't go to the gym”, this research provides another reason to reconsider it.
