How to choose the best gut health supplements in Australia
Most people arrive here expecting to need a complicated stack. In practice the decision comes down to four questions, and once you have answered them the shortlist is small.
- What is the actual goal? Regularity, bloating and general fibre intake point to different products.
- Is it a single ingredient or a blend? A single ingredient tells you exactly what you are taking and makes it easy to tell what is working.
- Has it been independently tested? Testing is not standard in this category. Every plant ingredient we sell is glyphosate tested.
- What does it cost per serve rather than per pack? Pack sizes vary widely and the sticker price hides the real number.
Prebiotic or probiotic: which do you actually need?
The two get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Probiotics are live bacteria. Prebiotics are the fibres that the bacteria already living in your gut feed on.
Prebiotic fibres such as PHGG and inulin are the more practical starting point for most people: they are stable at room temperature, they do not depend on strains surviving the trip, and they feed the bacteria you already have. If you would rather have both in one tub, Gut Health Plus is a prebiotic and probiotic combination.
Gut health powder or gut health capsules?
Powder is the better format for fibre, and it is not close. A useful daily amount of fibre is measured in grams, so matching it in capsules means swallowing a large number of them. Powder also lets you start low and increase gradually, which is the single most useful thing you can do when introducing fibre.
Capsules make sense for concentrated ingredients taken in milligram amounts. For fibre, they mostly make sense for the person selling them.
Which gut health supplement for bloating?
If you bloat easily, start with the gentlest option and go slowly. PHGG is a low FODMAP certified soluble fibre that ferments slowly, which is why it is usually the one recommended for people who have reacted badly to other fibres.
Begin at roughly half a serve for the first week and build from there. Most reactions to fibre are a reaction to the speed of the increase, not to the fibre itself. If bloating is persistent or painful, that is a conversation for your GP or a dietitian rather than a supplement label.
How long before a gut health supplement does anything?
Changes to regularity are often noticed within the first one to two weeks. Anything to do with the composition of your gut bacteria is slower and less visible, and is better measured in months than days.
The most common mistake is stopping at day four. The second most common is taking three new things at once, which makes it impossible to tell which one did anything.
What we stock, and who each one suits
- PHGG: low FODMAP certified, near tasteless, dissolves clear. The default starting point, and the gentlest.
- Organic inulin: a chicory root prebiotic fibre. Stronger fermenter than PHGG, so introduce it slowly.
- Psyllium husk: a bulking fibre. The traditional choice where regularity is the goal. Needs plenty of water.
- Gut Health Plus: prebiotic and probiotic in one, for people who would rather not run two products.
- Glutamine: an amino acid, commonly used alongside a fibre rather than instead of one.
